Practice Drills: Stress Testing a High Conviction Bet Using Howard Marks' Cycle Framework
A hands-on drill course for serious independent investors, portfolio managers in training and HNI investors who already know Howard Marks's ideas and now want to use them on a real position. You start by writing down the high conviction bet you want to test, separating first-level from second-level reasons for owning it, and mapping its exposure to each Marks cycle. You then read the cycle before sizing: score an Indian market temperature checklist, place the stock's sector on the profit and credit cycles, and measure where the sentiment pendulum sits on the name. The core drills stress test the thesis itself with bull, base and bear alternative histories, a shut credit window hitting the balance sheet, and valuation multiple compression when the pendulum swings back. Finally you convert the stress test into a position size, adjust that size for cycle temperature, set cycle-aware add, trim and exit triggers, replay a 2007 Indian infrastructure bet through the framework, and finish with a capstone stress test of your own bet end to end. Every drill uses NSE and BSE listed companies, screener.in data and INR figures.
