Case Study: A Digital Payment Fraud Ring and How It Was Detected
A forensic case study of a digital payment fraud ring, reconstructed as a composite from the patterns in public Indian enforcement actions, I4C advisories and RBI and FIU-IND guidance. The ring ran a fake stock tips and trading app scheme: WhatsApp and Telegram groups, a fake institutional trading app showing paper profits, and a network of rented mule accounts that moved victims' money through UPI and IMPS layers to cash and crypto within hours. The course follows the money stage by stage, then switches sides and shows how it was caught: 1930 helpline complaints on the NCRP portal, a bank's transaction monitoring rules for velocity and pass-through behaviour, device and KYC linkages across unrelated accounts, and a network graph that tied victims to cash-out points. It then covers the response, from lien marking and account freezes to STRs, FIRs and victim refunds, and ends with the control failures that let the ring in and a reusable detection playbook for bank, NBFC and fintech compliance teams. All transaction figures are illustrative.
