Advanced Financial Statement Fraud Detection: Beneish M-Score and Altman Z-Score

A concept course on the Beneish M-Score and the Altman Z-Score for senior forensic auditors, chief compliance officers and financial crime investigators. Most practitioners can plug numbers into both formulas; far fewer can explain where the coefficients came from, why the cutoffs sit where they do, what error rates they carry, or why a company can pass one test and fail the other. This course goes underneath both models: Beneish's probit study of earnings manipulators, Altman's discriminant analysis of failed manufacturers, the economic story each variable tells, and how Ind AS and Schedule III reporting changes the inputs for NSE and BSE listed companies. You will then use the two scores together through a manipulation-distress matrix, see how fabricated profits push a Z-Score into the safe zone, work through Satyam and Ricoh India, learn where both models break (banks, NBFCs, holding companies, young companies) and how manipulators stay under the cutoffs, and finish by designing a screening and escalation programme whose evidence holds up before an audit committee.

What You'll Master

Explain how Beneish and Altman built their models, what each coefficient means and what the original studies did and did not prove
Read every M-Score and Z-Score variable as an economic signal, not just a ratio
Choose cutoffs and model variants deliberately, based on error costs and the type of company
Combine both scores in a manipulation-distress matrix and recognise when manipulation is masking distress
Identify where each model breaks for Indian banks, NBFCs, holding companies and young companies, and what to use instead
Spot the techniques manipulators use to stay under the cutoffs, and supplement the scores with accruals, F-Score and Benford tests
Design a portfolio-wide screen and an escalation protocol whose documentation survives audit committee and regulatory review
